The Minnesota Law Enforcement Labor Services (LELS) recently held their 2019 Steward Training and invited Meuser Law Office, P.A. to speak at the two-day annual event. Ron Meuser and Jen Yackley gave a presentation to the group of approximately 120 attendees, which included LELS business agents, stewards and staff. Over the two days, the Meuser Law attorneys had the opportunity to meet new stewards, presented valuable information, and educated attendees on new aspects of PERA.
Founded in 1977, Law Enforcement and Labor Services, Inc. is Minnesota’s largest law enforcement labor union specializing in representing law enforcement personnel. The mission of LELS is to represent the interests and priorities of its members. LELS provides professional representation and advocates for its members in areas such as:
- Legal matters
- Competitive pay and benefits
- Negotiating safer working conditions
Ron and Jen presented to the stewards, business agents and staff at both days of the annual training event which included the various types of injuries we see with Minnesota’s first responders. They also discussed the benefits available to our first responders if injured in the line of duty, including workers’ compensation, PERA Police and Fire Duty Disability, and Continuation of Health Insurance Benefits Minn. Stat § 299A.465, and more:
- A review of work comp, including a checklist and the importance of reporting your injury
- Occupational diseases and the unique laws for first responders
- An in-depth Q&A session and questions which are frequently asked of them
Ron and Jen also presented information regarding post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and law enforcement, including the new workers’ compensation rules that govern PTSD claims, and complex coordination rules that apply specifically to our state’s peace officers who receive Duty Disability and workers’ compensation benefits. Meuser Law Office, P.A. has been on the forefront of the legislation in this area and helped to craft the statutory language.
At the end of the training, Meuser Law Office, P.A. hosted a social gathering at the LELS Open House where they were able to continue conversation with the attendees about the training topics in a more casual setting.
Additionally, in recognition of the devoted advocacy of Ron Meuser and his firm, Meuser Law Office, P.A., in ensuring police officers throughout Minnesota receive all the benefits to which they are entitled under the law, Law Enforcement Labor Services presented him with a very special gift. Executive Director Sean Gormley and Business Agent Jim Roberts gave Ron a beautiful metal sculpture during their Annual Steward Training in appreciation for his and the firm’s work on the behalf of Minnesota police.
